As you may have noticed on Monday, we dived into this week by travelling back in time to a market in colonial India. After debating about Britain’s treatment of India last week, this week we wrote the opening to a story from the perspective of an Indian person that was there at the time. We loved exploring the market in our classrooms, smelling the aromatic spices and oils, all to the soundtrack of traditional Indian music.
We built on our writing as the week went on, culminating in an editing session on Friday where we edited our spelling, punctuation and grammar as well as dressing up our language to make our writing really come alive.
In Maths, we began the topic of subtraction. We have spent the week experimenting and practising with manipulatives like dienes, thinking about subtraction’s relationship with addition and even having a go at some inverse operations. On Friday, we put on our detective hats again for an investigation. If you’d like to have another look at some of the sheets from this week, you can find them here.
In guided reading, we came to the end of the story of the Ramayana – its dramatic finale was filled with action and we were able to draw some very rich vocabulary from it.
Our Art lesson with Mrs Smith this week saw us continuing the Indian theme, drawing mango patterns as a border for the pictures of vehicles we did in the previous weeks. This is the last we’ll be doing on these, however, as next week it’ll be time for some Christmas-themed art! In RE though we’ve been looking at other religious traditions such as the 5 Ks of Sikhism. It was Guru Nanak’s birthday on Monday and we learnt all about the celebrations surrounding it.
Next week:
English – we will be continuing our narrative about life in India before and after the British Empire.
Maths – we will continue learning about subtraction, moving onto using the column method.

Reminder – Morning Drop off
The morning drop off window for Year 3 is 8.25-8.35am. All classroom doors will be locked by 8.40am, and children will need to be registered at the office to ensure correct attendance is recorded.
